There are daily flights with Pelican Air from Johannesburg . There are also flights from the Kruger NP, and charter flights can be arranged.

If driving - it is 700km from Maputo to Vilanculos. The journey is quite tough and is best done over two days with a stop at Inhambane. From the Kruger NP it is 400km, mostly on gravel roads

On arrival at Vilanculos airport you will be met and transported to the beach for a 45-minute boat journey to the Sanctuary. A welcome paddle at the start and end of the boat ride gives you a flavour of the beauty of staying by the sea. At high tide the approach is onto the beach in front of Pambele and a first glimpse of the area. If the tide is low then the boat lands in a nearby bay and the last part of the transfer is in a vehicle.

A visa is necessary to enter Mozambique and can be acquired beforehand or on arrival.

Mozambique has a tropical climate.

Summer, from November to April, is hot and temperatures may reach 35C. This is also the rainy season, though any storms and rain rarely last long.

The winter months, from May to October, are cooler and drier with temperatures usually between 20 and 25C. At times it can be windy and the evenings are cooler.

Occasionally cyclones reach the area around February time.

It is easy to walk along the beach, look for shells, discover Pelican Bay and the mangroves beyond.

There is lots to discover in the Sanctuary with lakes, birds and the occasional glimpse of an animal.

The sea provides a wonderful opportunity to go out in a kayak, or maybe to snorkel or to dive on the coral reefs, and you could be lucky enough to spot an elusive dugong.
